This page explains what built-to-print gaging actually involves: what a gage maker needs from you, what drives cost and lead time, and what to do when you have a part but no drawing.
Most quality departments run into this in one of five ways:
All five are routine here. The last one takes longer, and we will say so up front.
The more of this you can send, the faster and tighter the quote. If you only have some of it, send what you have — we will tell you what’s missing rather than guess.
Send the part. Reverse engineering from a sample is slower and it carries a caveat worth stating plainly: a gage made from a measured sample verifies conformance to that sample, not to a design intent nobody has written down. If the sample is worn or was itself out of tolerance, the gage inherits the error. We will tell you what we measured and what we inferred before anything gets cut, so you can decide whether the inference is one you want to accept.
This is the request we see most often, and the one catalog suppliers decline most often.
A thread becomes non-standard for ordinary reasons: a designer needed a pitch that isn’t in UNC, UNF, or UNEF for that diameter; a pitch diameter was tightened beyond the published class to control fit; a form was truncated to clear a coating; a multi-start lead was specified for assembly speed. None of that is exotic. It just falls outside what a catalog house tools for.
What a maker needs for a non-standard thread is short: nominal diameter, pitch or threads per inch, form and included angle, number of starts, hand, and the pitch diameter limits you want the gage to hold. Class of fit if the print names one. If the print gives you a pitch diameter and a tolerance and nothing else, that is usually enough to start.
Metric, UN, UNJ, ACME, Stub ACME, Buttress, BSPP, BSPT, BSW, NPT, NPTF, NPSM, NPSC, NPSL, API, and Spiralock forms are all available, along with miniature threads and specials that don’t belong to any named series. If your form isn’t on that list, ask anyway — the list is longer than a page like this can usefully hold.
Two gages that look similar on a print can differ substantially in price. The drivers, roughly in order of impact:
If lead time is the constraint rather than price, say so when you send the print. There is often a faster path — a different maker, a simpler gage that still answers the question, or a standard gage with a special certification — but only if we know that is what matters to you.

No. Single gages are normal in this business, and most built-to-print work is a quantity of one or two.
Yes. Send the gage or its certificate. If it carries a serial number and a maker’s mark, that often shortens the process considerably.
We will tell you before it gets made. Prints with impossible or contradictory callouts turn up regularly — a pitch diameter outside the stated class, a tolerance that can’t be gaged as drawn, a form that won’t clear. Catching that at quote time is cheaper than catching it at receipt.

Yes, where it makes sense. Lapping, adjustment, and rework are often cheaper than replacement, particularly on larger gages. We will tell you honestly when a gage is past the point where rework is worth doing.
